Ganar y perder: win, beat, lose, draw

El español «ganar» sirve para el premio y para el rival a la vez: «les ganamos» es tanto we won como we beat them. De ahí el error más frecuente aquí: decir «we won them» en vez de «we beat them». Por ejemplo: «We beat them 3–0 and won the championship» — Les ganamos 3–0 y ganamos el campeonato.

Win toma premio, partido o título: win the match, win a medal. Beat toma al rival o al récord — lo que se supera: we beat them 3–0, she beat the world record.

Perder es lose to, con to ante el rival: we lost to them 0–2. Empatar es draw: the match ended in a draw o el verbo they drew 1–1.
