Opposite, behind, along: Tamil has no prepositions
An English preposition stands before the word: 'opposite the school'. Tamil keeps no such word. It has a helper that comes after the noun, and the noun takes the ending that helper asks for. பாடசாலைக்கு எதிரே — 'school-to opposite'. For example: “கோயிலுக்கு பின்னால ஒரு சின்ன ஒழுங்கை இருக்கு” — Behind the temple there is a small lane. A rule from the Tamil course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
An English preposition stands before the word: 'opposite the school'. Tamil keeps no such word. It has a helper that comes after the noun, and the noun takes the ending that helper asks for. பாடசாலைக்கு எதிரே (pāḍasālaikku edirē) — 'school-to opposite'.
The largest group wants -க்கு. Here belong எதிரே (edirē) 'opposite', பக்கத்தில (pakkattila) 'beside', பின்னால (piṉṉāla) 'behind', முன்னால (muṉṉāla) 'in front', கிட்ட (kiṭṭa) 'near'. They are easiest to hold in pairs.
The second group sticks straight onto the word: ஓரமா (ōramā) 'along' gives வீதியோரமா (vīdiyōramā). The third is no word at all but a second action: வீதியைத் தாண்டி (vīdiyait tāṇḍi) 'across the road' is really 'having crossed the street'.
A finished phrase runs backwards for English. Landmark first, helper next, verb at the very end: பாலத்தை தாண்டி (pālattai tāṇḍi), நடைபாதைக்கு எதிரே (naḍaipādaikku edirē), and only then நில்லுங்க (nilluṅga).

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
