The language the family speaks

The order

1. Names and kinship. Mum, dad, grandmother, the wife’s brother. In most of these languages kinship is named in more detail than in Russian, and getting it mixed up shows more than any grammar mistake.
2. The table and food. The most charged topic: at the table people talk about food, and the first words you understand will be exactly these.
3. Short replies. “Thank you, it’s delicious”, “I am learning your language”. Two phrases after which people start addressing you directly.
4. Listen more than you speak. Understanding arrives before speech. That is normal and it is not falling behind: you will start recognising things by ear long before you can answer.

What usually stops people

What if it is awkward to make mistakes in front of the relatives?

Practice is private: on your phone, with no strangers listening and no grades. Awkwardness gets in the way more than missing words — it is one of the most reliably measured factors in language learning.

What if they switch to Russian anyway?

They will. But one phrase in their language changes how you are treated more than fluent command three years from now.
