In childhood I ran: a future that tells about the past
The form in -வேன் is the future: நாளைக்கு வருவேன் — 'I will come tomorrow'. But it holds a second job as well. It tells of a habit, of what is done generally and always. For example: “அந்தக் காலத்தில எங்கட ஊரில எல்லாரும் குளத்தில குளிப்பினம்” — In those times everyone in our village bathed in the pond. A rule from the Tamil course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
The form in -வேன் is the future: நாளைக்கு வருவேன் (nāḷaikku varuvēṉ) — 'I will come tomorrow'. But it holds a second job as well. It tells of a habit, of what is done generally and always.
காலையில ஐந்து மணிக்கு எழும்பேன் is not 'I will get up tomorrow' but 'I get up at five'. The form in -கிறேன் is what runs now; a habit stands outside time, so the future takes it.
Hence the surprise: the same form tells of habits in the past. சின்ன வயசில ஆத்தில குளிப்பேன் (siṉṉa vayasila āttila kuḷippēṉ) — 'as a child I bathed in the river'. The verb holds no past; one word சின்ன வயசில (siṉṉa vayasila) holds it.
So a story about the past always opens with அந்தக் காலத்தில (andak kālattila), சின்ன வயசில or முந்தி (mundi). Take them away and the phrase turns into the future.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
