How it works
A bare command is rougher than it looks. சொல்லு (sollu) 'say' with nothing round it lands like a shout. The first softener is கொஞ்சம் (koñcam): கொஞ்சம் பாருங்க (koñcam pāruṅga) — 'do take a look'. Here it works on tone, not on quantity.
The second move is to turn the request into a question. The ending -ஆ (-ā) does it with one letter: மாத்தலாமா (māttalāmā)? 'may we change it?', சொல்லட்டா (sollaṭṭā)? 'may I say something?'. A question leaves the other person a way out.
Here belongs -ங்க too, the respect tail that turns சொல்லு into சொல்லுங்க (solluṅga).
And the main thing: a plain 'no' is avoided in talk. People say பாப்பம் (pāppam) 'we shall see' or வேற ஒரு தரம் பாப்பம் (vēṟa oru taram pāppam) 'another time, then'. That is the refusal, and it should be read as one.
