First words
Every conversation starts with them — and so does the first impression: one greeting in the local language and you stop being a stranger within a second.

Curiosities in Western Armenian
Western Armenian is the Armenian of the diaspora: it was spoken in Ottoman Western Armenia, and after 1915 its speakers became the communities of Beirut, Marseille, New York and Los Angeles. In Armenia itself people speak the Eastern variety, which is why descendants of the survivors often cannot understand their own relatives in the historic homeland without a translation.
