Tamil assembles job names more often than it learns them. It takes the name of the work and glues on an ending for the person. There are four of them, and they do not swap. How it works
Tamil assembles job names more often than it learns them. It takes the name of the work and glues on an ending for the person. There are four of them, and they do not swap.
-காரர் is the liveliest and fits almost anything: கடை (kaḍai) 'shop' gives கடைக்காரர் (kaḍaikkārar), தோட்டம் (tōṭṭam) 'garden' gives தோட்டக்காரர் (tōṭṭakkārar). The rough male form is -காரன்: மோசடிக்காரன் (mōsaḍikkāraṉ) 'a cheat'. The difference is respect, not sex.
-ஆளர் is bookish and official: கணக்காளர் (kaṇakkāḷar) 'accountant'. -ஞர் gives a master of an art: இசைக்கலைஞர் (isaikkalaiñar) 'musician'. -வோர் is polite and knows no number: தொழில் முனைவோர் (toḻil muṉaivōr).
And now the main thing: working as what. English says 'I work as a mechanic'; Tamil puts -ஆ (-ā): மெக்கானிக்கா வேலை செய்யுறேன் (mekkāṉikkā vēlai seyyuṟēṉ). A role goes the same way: தன்னார்வலரா வேலை செய்யுறாங்க (taṉṉārvalarā vēlai seyyuṟāṅga).
