Text

  • Oʻn besh yil chekganman, har ertalab choy va sigaret bilan boshlardim. Oʻtgan yili shifokor koʻriktan keyin oʻpkamda yalligʻlanish bor deb aytdi. Chekish zararli, deb maslahat berdi va chekishni tashlashni soʻradi. Birinchi hafta eng qiyin boʻldi, tunda uyqusizlik bezovta qildi. Endi haftada uch marta yuguraman va oʻzimni yaxshiroq his qilaman. Beka oʻylagan edim, bu zararli odatsiz qob kela olmayman deb.
I smoked for fifteen years and began every morning with tea and a cigarette. Last year, after an examination, the doctor said there is an inflammation in my lungs. He advised quitting: smoking is harmful. The first week was the hardest; at night insomnia tormented me. Now I run three times a week and feel better. In vain I thought I could not cope without this bad habit.

  4. What does he do now?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Uzbek?

B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
