And, or, too: Tamil has no conjunctions — it has tails

Listing in Tamil means hanging an ending on every word of the list. There is nothing here like the English 'and' standing between them. For example: “நான் நாவலும் சிறுகதையும் படிக்கிறேன், கவிதை படிக்கிறேல்லை” — I read novels and stories, but I do not read poems. A rule from the Tamil course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Listing in Tamil means hanging an ending on every word of the list. There is nothing here like the English 'and' standing between them.

'And' is -உம் (--um), and it goes on every member. Not 'A and B' but 'A-and B-and': நாவலும் கவிதையும் படிக்கிறேன் — 'I read novels and poems'. Drop the second -உம் and the phrase hangs unfinished.

The same -உம் alone means 'too' and 'even': அவரும் வந்தார் (avarum vandār) — 'he came too'. With a negative it gives 'not one of them': ஒருத்தரும் வரேல்லை (oruttarum varēllai) — 'nobody came'.

'Or' is -ஓ, also on every member: நாடகமோ படமோ (nāḍagamō paḍamō) 'a play or a film'. The separate அல்லது (alladu) is bookish. Between two actions no tail goes at all: there the first verb takes a form in -இ.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

Listing in Tamil means hanging an ending on every word of the list. There is nothing here like the English 'and' standing between them.

What does it look like in an example sentence Tamil?

“நான் நாவலும் சிறுகதையும் படிக்கிறேன், கவிதை படிக்கிறேல்லை” (nāṉ nāvalum siṟugadaiyum paḍikkiṟēṉ, kavidai paḍikkiṟēllai) — I read novels and stories, but I do not read poems. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
