-அட்டும் is the living form, heard every day. Take the verb stem and hang -அட்டும் on it: வரட்டும் 'let him come', கடவுள் காப்பாத்தட்டும் (kaḍavuḷ kāppāttaṭṭum) 'may god keep you'. The same ending also gives permission: அவர் போகட்டும் 'let him go then'.
வாழ்க (vāḻka) is solemn and frozen: நீடூழி வாழ்க (nīḍūḻi vāḻka) 'long life'. New verbs are never put into it; the learned ones are said from a stage and written on a poster.
Ready greetings do without a verb: இனிய பிறந்தநாள் வாழ்த்துக்கள் (iṉiya piṟandanāḷ vāḻttukkaḷ) — 'sweet birthday wishes'. In a house of mourning வாழ்த்து (vāḻttu) is not said: there it is ஆன்மா சாந்தியடையட்டும்.
