Pamiętać, zapamiętać, przypomnieć sobie: the verbs of memory

English splits memory into remember, memorise, recall and remind. Polish makes the same splits with verbs from one old root, seen as pamię- and -pomn-. For example: “Pamiętam naszą pierwszą rozmowę” — I remember our first conversation. A rule from the Polish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

English splits memory into remember, memorise, recall and remind. Polish makes the same splits with verbs from one old root, seen as pamię- and -pomn-.

Pamiętać is to remember, a state: pamiętam to zdjęcie — I remember this photo. For remembering about something, add o and the at-form: pamiętaj o spotkaniu — don't forget the meeting.

Zapamiętać is to memorise, a result: zapamiętałem jego imię. The za- at the front says the job is done.

Przypomnieć sobie is to recall, and sobie is required: you recall for yourself. Without sobie it means to remind: przypomnij mi — remind me. Zapomnieć is to forget; the thing left behind takes the of-form: zapomniałem kluczy — I forgot my keys.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
