English

Plural about people: człowiek → ludzie, dziecko → dzieci

Plurals of words for people are where Polish gets irregular. There is no rule to learn here, just a handful of very common words. For example: “Na ulicy spotkałem trzech mężczyzn i dwie kobiety” — In the street I met three men and two women. A rule from the Polish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Plurals of words for people are where Polish gets irregular. There is no rule to learn here, just a handful of very common words.

Człowiek becomes ludzie in the plural, a full swap like English person and people. Then come ludzi, ludziom, z ludźmi. There is no człowieki, and it is the loudest beginner mistake.

Dziecko becomes dzieci. After a lot of or few, the noun takes the of-form, and here it is dzieci again: mało dzieci. Others: mężczyzna → mężczyźni, kobieta → kobiety, obywatel → obywatele.

Some words exist only in the plural: drzwi — a door, plecy — a back, spodnie — trousers. So it's drzwi są otwarte, with a plural verb, as with English trousers.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
