A refusal is built in three steps here, and a bare nie is the lowest and rudest rung of that ladder. Learning the steps pays off more than two dozen ready-made phrases. How it works
A refusal is built in three steps here, and a bare nie is the lowest and rudest rung of that ladder. Learning the steps pays off more than two dozen ready-made phrases.
Step one — regret: niestety at the start of the phrase already softens: Niestety, nie mogę. The word literally means un-happily, and the no next to it stops sounding harsh.
Step two — a cause through fear: obawiam się, że nie dam rady — I am afraid I will not manage. The particle by softens further: wolałbym nie — I would rather not; musiałbym już iść — I would have to be going.
Step three — the door left open: może innym razem — maybe some other time; pomyślę o tym — I will think about it. A refusal without the third step is heard as final: the door closes. And the English could you... is not translated with a negation here — czy mógłbyś, without any nie.
