Połowa, jedna trzecia, dwa razy: share, multiple and difference
Parts, times and differences each have their own pattern. For example: “Połowa klasy była chora, a jedna trzecia na wycieczce” — Half the class was ill and a third was on a trip. A rule from the Polish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Parts, times and differences each have their own pattern.
A part is a noun: połowa — half, jedna trzecia — a third, ćwierć — a quarter. The whole takes the of-form, the shape a noun has after of: połowa ludzi, jedna trzecia klasy. Half of a measure is shorter: pół godziny, pół roku.
Times use razy: dwa razy więcej — twice as much, trzy razy mniej — a third as much. The formal podwójnie means double: zapłacił podwójnie — he paid double.
A difference uses o: o jedną trzecią więcej — a third more, o połowę mniej — less by half. Don't mix the two: dwa razy mniej is half as much, but o dwa mniej is two fewer. razy multiplies, o adds or takes away.
