How it works

Many abstract nouns in Polish are built from words you already know. Learn the pattern and you can decode new ones at a glance.

-ość is the busiest ending. Take an adjective, drop its ending and add -ość: jaki → jakość, stabilny → stabilność, cierpliwy → cierpliwość. It works like English -ness or -ity.

All these nouns are feminine. In the of-form, used after bez and dużo, they end in -i: bez stabilności, dużo cierpliwości. With nie- in front you get the opposite: nieśmiałość = nie + śmiały, nierówność = nie + równy.

-stwo is rarer: bogaty → bogactwo, wealth. Words in -yzm, like egoizm, came whole from Latin and follow no Polish pattern.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
