Lód topnieje, plastik się rozkłada: what happens by itself

Talk about nature is full of sentences with no doer at all: ice melts, plastic breaks down, a river gets polluted. Polish builds them in two ways. For example: “Lód topnieje, a poziom morza rośnie” — The ice is melting and the sea level is rising. A rule from the Polish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Talk about nature is full of sentences with no doer at all: ice melts, plastic breaks down, a river gets polluted. Polish builds them in two ways.

In the first, the thing itself is the subject: Lód topnieje — the ice is melting, Cena rośnie — the price is rising. Many such verbs come with się: Plastik się rozkłada, Rzeka się zatruwa. Here się does not mean on purpose; it says the change happens inside the thing. More: psuć się — to spoil, kończyć się — to run out.

In the second, a noun names the process: zanieczyszczenie oceanów rośnie — ocean pollution is growing. The news loves this style.

Don't confuse process and state. Rzeka jest zatruta — the river is poisoned, a state. Rzeka się zatruwa — it is being poisoned, right now.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
