Robić or zrobić: aspect, and why the prefix changes more than meaning

The verbs of a deed's progress stand in pairs: zaczynać and zacząć, kończyć and skończyć. These are not synonyms but aspect: one names the process, the other the result. For example: “Robię zakupy, dziś zrobię je rano” — I am doing the shopping; today I will do it in the morning. A rule from the Polish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

The verbs of a deed's progress stand in pairs: zaczynać and zacząć, kończyć and skończyć. These are not synonyms but aspect: one names the process, the other the result.

The imperfective answers what to do: robić, pisać, przesuwać. The perfective — what to get done: zrobić, napisać, przesunąć.

The pair is most often made with a prefix: pisać → napisać, kończyć → skończyć. Sometimes with a suffix inside the word: przesunąć → przesuwać, zapytać → pytać. Rarely with different stems: brać and wziąć, widzieć and zobaczyć.

The trap: a perfective verb has no present tense. Zrobię does not mean I am doing — it is future: Zrobię to jutro — I will do it tomorrow. I am doing now can only be robię. Say it strictly: Kiedy skończę, zadzwonię — both verbs in one future.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
