Ստիպված էի, կարելի էր: have to and can in yesterday and tomorrow

To move 'have to' and 'may' into yesterday or tomorrow, you leave those words alone. The linker beside them moves instead. For example: “Ստիպված էի ամբողջ գիշեր օդանավակայանում սպասել” — I had to wait at the airport all night. A rule from the Armenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

To move 'have to' and 'may' into yesterday or tomorrow, you leave those words alone. The linker beside them moves instead.

Պետք է գնամ (petk' e gnam) is I have to go, պետք էր գնայի had to, պետք կլինի գնամ (petk' klini gnam) will have to. In the past both halves shift: the linker and the verb, գնայի for գնամ (gnam).

Next to it stands ստիպված (stipvats), plain 'I had no choice': ստիպված էի սպասել (stipvats ei spasel), I had to wait. Ստիպված կլինեմ տաքսի վերցնել (stipvats klinem tak'si vertsnel) — I'll have to take a taxi. The word itself never changes.

Keep two apart. Պետք չէ շտապել (petk' che shtapel) means no need to hurry, nobody is asking; չէր կարելի շտապել (cher kareli shtapel) means hurrying was not allowed.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in an example sentence Armenian?

“Ստիպված էի ամբողջ գիշեր օդանավակայանում սպասել” (stipvats ei amboghj gisher odanavakayanum spasel) — I had to wait at the airport all night. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
