How it works
The language of offices rests on one insert: -վ- before the verb ending. Ընդունել (əndunel), to accept, becomes ընդունվել (əndunvel), to be accepted.
After that the verb behaves like any other. Դիմումն ընդունվում (əndunvum) է (dimumn əndunvum e) — the application is being accepted. Դիմումն ընդունվեց (əndunvets) (dimumn əndunvets) — it was accepted. Դիմումն ընդունվել (əndunvel) է (dimumn əndunvel e) — it has been accepted.
On signs the same letter carries both bans and permissions. Արգելվում (argelvum) է ծխել (tskhel) (argelvum e tskhel) — smoking is prohibited. Թույլատրվում է լուսանկարել (lusankarel) — photography is allowed.
The trap: that same -վ- also means 'to oneself'. Լվանալ (lvanal) is to wash, լվացվել to wash yourself, հագնվել (hagnvel) to get dressed. On paper it reads 'done by someone'; with people it usually means 'by yourself'.
