Գրում էի or գրեցի: two pasts and the question of finishing

English splits the past into 'wrote', 'was writing' and 'have written'. Armenian splits it the same way, and each shape has its own job. For example: “Կարդում էի, երբ հանկարծ լույսը հանգավ” — I was reading when the lights suddenly went out. A rule from the Armenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

English splits the past into 'wrote', 'was writing' and 'have written'. Armenian splits it the same way, and each shape has its own job.

The simple past is գրեցի (gretsi), գնացի (gnatsi): one action that happened and finished. That is 'wrote', 'went'.

The stretched past is գրում էի (grum ei), գնում էի (gnum ei): it went on, repeated, or set the scene. Կարդում էի (kardum ei), երբ զանգեցիր — I was reading when you called. The first stretched, the second cut in.

With արդեն (arden), դեռ (derr) and երբեք (yerbek') you need the third shape, գրել եմ (grel em): Արդեն կարդացել եմ (arden kardatsel em), I have already read it.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
