Այն բնակարանը, որ վարձեցինք: how the words around a noun line up

Everything that describes a noun stands to its left, and the noun closes the group. The adjective itself never changes: նոր բնակարան, նոր բնակարանները. For example: “Այն բնակարանը, որ երեկ տեսանք, թանկ էր” — The apartment we saw yesterday was expensive. A rule from the Armenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Everything that describes a noun stands to its left, and the noun closes the group. The adjective itself never changes: նոր բնակարան (nor bnakaran), նոր բնակարանները (nor bnakarannerə).

The owner goes in front too, English 'the house's door' rather than 'the door of the house': տան դուռը (tan durrə). The same order gives վարձակալության պայմանագիր (vardzakalut'yan paymanagir), a lease agreement.

The -ը tail is used once, on the last word of the group: մեծ լուսավոր բնակարանը (mets lusavor bnakaranə), the big bright flat. Nothing is hung on մեծ (mets) or լուսավոր (lusavor).

The trap: 'the flat we rented' wants այն (ayn) out in front — Այն բնակարանը (ayn bnakaranə), որ վարձեցինք (vor vardzetsink'), երրորդ հարկում է (yerrord harkum e). Այն here is not 'that one far off' but a warning that an explanation follows.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

how the words around a noun line up: how does it work in Armenian?

Everything that describes a noun stands to its left, and the noun closes the group. The adjective itself never changes: նոր բնակարան, նոր բնակարանները.

What does it look like in an example sentence Armenian?

“Այն բնակարանը, որ երեկ տեսանք, թանկ էր” (ayn bnakaranə, vor yerek tesank', t'ank er) — The apartment we saw yesterday was expensive. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
