Որ, որովհետև, եթե, երբ: two thoughts in one sentence

'Tell him that I'm running late', 'he didn't come because he was sick' — such sentences need conjunctions. The conjunction opens the second half, and the word order inside it does not change. For example: “Ասա նրան, որ հիմա կգամ” — Tell him I'll come right away. A rule from the Armenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

'Tell him that I'm running late', 'he didn't come because he was sick' — such sentences need conjunctions. The conjunction opens the second half, and the word order inside it does not change.

Որ (vor) is 'that': Ասա (asa), որ ուշանում եմ (vor ushanum em). It also does 'so that', and then the verb behind it drops կ-: Ուզում եմ (uzum em), որ գաս (vor gas). That means 'I want you to come'.

Որովհետև (vorovhetev) is 'because', the answer to ինչո՞ւ (inchu), why. Երբ (yerb) is 'when': Երբ հասնեմ (yerb hasnem), կզանգեմ (kzangem).

The trap is եթե (yet'e), 'if'. In the if-half the verb goes without կ- (եթե գաս (yet'e gas)), in the main half with it (կուրախանամ): Եթե գաս, կուրախանամ. English puts a future in both halves; 'եթե կգաս' sounds wrong.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

two thoughts in one sentence: how does it work in Armenian?

'Tell him that I'm running late', 'he didn't come because he was sick' — such sentences need conjunctions. The conjunction opens the second half, and the word order inside it does not change.

What does it look like in an example sentence Armenian?

“Ասա նրան, որ հիմա կգամ” (asa nran, vor hima kgam) — Tell him I'll come right away. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
