A number without a classifier does not sound in Thai: not "three eggs" but "egg three piece". The order is always one: thing, number, classifier — khao nueng chan — one portion of rice. How it works
A number without a classifier does not sound in Thai: not "three eggs" but "egg three piece". The order is always one: thing, number, classifier — khao nueng chan — one portion of rice.
Food has classifiers of its own. จาน (чаан) — a portion, a plate: khao nueng chan. ชิ้น (чин) — a piece: khanom song chin — two cookies. ถ้วย (туай) — a cup: cha nueng thuai. แก้ว (гэо) — a glass: nam nueng kaeo. The classifier is chosen by the shape the food stands in front of you, not by the word itself.
The question "how many" is kii instead of a number, and the classifier stays: kafae kii kaeo — how many glasses of coffee?
Forget the classifier and Thais will still understand you, but it sounds off. For objects, an ("piece") is the safe fallback: klong saam an — three boxes.
