Two phrases in one: cause, purpose, concession, choice

A complex sentence in Thai is assembled from two simple ones, with a link between them. For example: “ราคา แพง เพราะ งั้น ไม่ ซื้อ” — It is expensive, so I am not buying. A rule from the Thai course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

A complex sentence in Thai is assembled from two simple ones, with a link between them.

The cause opens the phrase: เพราะ (пхро) — "because". The consequence closes it: เพราะ งั้น (пхро нган) — "therefore". The pair works like question and answer: phro rot tit ... phro ngan ma cha — because of the jam, therefore came late.

Purpose — เพื่อ (пхиа): sue khong phue tham ahan — bought groceries in order to cook. After phuea comes the deed itself; no "in order" needs adding.

Concession is introduced by แม้ ว่า (мэо ваа) — "although", and continues through ko: mae wa glai ko pai — although it is far, I am going anyway. The choice between two things is made by หรือ (рыэ): cha rue kafae — tea or coffee.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
