Thai builds most traits of character from ใจ, "the heart", plus what kind of heart it is. jai di — kind, literally "a good heart"; jai yen — calm, "a cool heart"; jai rai — wicked, "a cruel heart". How it works
Thai builds most traits of character from ใจ (чай), "the heart", plus what kind of heart it is. jai di — kind, literally "a good heart"; jai yen — calm, "a cool heart"; jai rai — wicked, "a cruel heart".
The size of the heart works too: jai kwang — generous, "a wide heart"; jai khaep — petty, "a narrow one". Temperature is about temper: jai ron, "a hot heart", flares up fast. English has a warm heart and a cold shoulder, so the pattern sticks at once.
The second device is ความ (кхуам) in front of a word, which turns it into an idea. khwam jing — the truth; khwam fan — a dream; khwam yaak — a desire.
To ask about someone's character, say nisai yang rai — "what is their character like?".
