เข้า and ออก: inward and outward
Motion in Thai is assembled from a pair of gate verbs: เข้า — enter, ออก — exit. They glue onto a deed and turn it. khao yuu — enter and live, move in; yai ok — move outward, move out. For example: “เดือน หน้า เข้า อยู่ คอน โด ใหม่” — Next month we move into the new apartment. A rule from the Thai course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Motion in Thai is assembled from a pair of gate verbs: เข้า (кхао) — enter, ออก (оок) — exit. They glue onto a deed and turn it. khao yuu — enter and live, move in; yai ok — move outward, move out.
The same pair makes places: thang khao — the way in, the entrance; thang ok — the way out, the exit. These two signs hang on doors in every condo and airport. Both are built from thang — the way.
One leaves a job the way one leaves a room: la ok — ask outward, resign. And if the pushing out is done to you — lai ok, driven out. The only difference is who does the asking.
To either verb you can add pai — and the motion becomes completed: khao pai — enter there; ok pai — exit from there. The direction is always one of two: inward or outward.
Table
| Direction | Word | Reading | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| move in | เข้า อยู่ | khao yuu | เข้า อยู่ คอน โด — move into the condo |
| move out | ย้าย ออก | yai ok | ย้าย ออก เดือน หน้า — move out next month |
| entrance | ทาง เข้า | thang khao | ทาง เข้า อยู่ หน้า — the entrance is in front |
| exit | ทาง ออก | thang ok | ทาง ออก อยู่ หลัง — the exit is at the back |
| resign | ลา ออก | la ok | ลา ออก แล้ว — has resigned already |
| enter there | เข้า ไป | khao pai | เข้า ไป ใน ห้อง — enter the room |
| exit from there | ออก ไป | ok pai | ออก ไป จาก บ้าน — leave the house |
By example
- เดือน หน้า เข้า อยู่ คอน โด ใหม่дыан наа кхао ю кхон до майNext month we move into the new apartment
- ทาง เข้า อยู่ หน้า บ้านтаанг кхао ю наа банThe entrance is in front of the house
- พรุ่ง นี้ ต้อง ย้าย ออกпхрунг ний тонг йаай оокTomorrow we have to move out
How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Motion in Thai is assembled from a pair of gate verbs: เข้า — enter, ออก — exit. They glue onto a deed and turn it. khao yuu — enter and live, move in; yai ok — move outward, move out.
What does it look like in a Thai example sentence?
“เดือน หน้า เข้า อยู่ คอน โด ใหม่” (дыан наа кхао ю кхон до май) — Next month we move into the new apartment. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
