English

ก่อน, หลัง จาก, ขณะ ที่: the order of events without conjugations

English bends its verbs: went, will go, having done. The Thai verb never changes. Small words around it hold the whole order of events, and each is an ordinary word of its own. For example: “ก่อน ที่ จะ ขึ้น เครื่อง บิน กิน ข้าว ก่อน” — Before boarding the plane, eat. A rule from the Thai course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

English bends its verbs: went, will go, having done. The Thai verb never changes. Small words around it hold the whole order of events, and each is an ordinary word of its own.

Before — kon thi: kon thi cha pai laang mue — "before going to wash the hands". After — lang jak thi: lang jak thi fon yut — "after the rain stopped". Both conjunctions stand at the front of their piece, and the verb inside is not touched.

Until — jon kwa: ro jon kwa rot ma — "wait until the bus comes". While — khana thi: khana thi tham ngaan fang plong dai — "while working, one can listen to music".

And remember the word from this lesson: to jak ni — "on from this", from now on. It opens promises: what from now on will always be.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
