Text
படிப்படியா போறன்; ஒவ்வொரு தரமும் நல்லா வருது.nāṉ reṇḍu varuṣamā tamiḻ paḍikkiṟaṉ. mudalla tāṉāvē oru agarādiyōḍa ārambiccaṉ. eḻuttu kattukkiṟadu kaṣṭamā irukkum eṇḍu niṉaiccaṉ, āṉā adu ilaguvā vandadu. ilakkaṇam tāṉ eṉakku kaṣṭamā varudu. adukkup piṟagu oru payiṟci vaguppukku padivu seytaṉ. eṅgaḍa payiṟṟuvippāḷar ovvoru vaguppilayum reṇḍu mūṇḍu tiruttam solluvār; mudalla eṉakku vekkamā irundadu, ippa adu tāṉ eṉra muṉṉēṟṟam eṇḍu teriyum. eṉakku ippa paḍikkat teriyum, kēṭṭu puriñcukkavum teriyum. āṉā saraḷamā kadaikkiṟadukku eṉakku iṉṉum payiṟci vēṇum. paḍippaḍiyā pōṟaṉ; ovvoru taramum nallā varudu.I have been learning Tamil for two years. At first I began on my own, with a dictionary. I thought learning the letters would be hard, but they came easily. Grammar, though, is hard for me. Then I enrolled in courses. Our trainer makes two or three remarks at every lesson; at first I was ashamed, but now I know that this is exactly my progress. Now I can read and understand by ear. But to speak fluently I need more practice. I go step by step; with every time, better.
Comprehension questions
The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.
- How did the narrator begin?
- What came easily to him?
- What does the trainer do at every lesson?
- What does the narrator still lack?
Frequently asked
What level do you need to read this text in Tamil?
B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.
How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
