Text
எதிர்காலம் பற்றி நான் இன்னும் முடிவு செய்யேல்லை; முடிஞ்சா ஒருநாள் சொந்த ஊருக்கு திரும்புவன்.nāṉ oru siṉṉa kirāmattila piṟandaṉ. eṉra sonda ūr kaḍalukkup pakkattila irukku. siṉṉa vayasila nāṉ tiṉamum āttila kuḷippaṉ, appāvōḍa mīṉ piḍikkap pōvaṉ. andak kālattila ūrila pōṉ irukkēllai; adu migavum nāḷ mundi. iḷamaiyila nāṉ pāḍasālai paḍippai muḍiccaṉ, piṟagu nagarattukku pōṉaṉ. irubadu vayasila mudal vēlai kiḍaiccudu. oru taram nāṉ vēlai māṟiṉaṉ, appa ellām māṟiṭṭudu. ippa nāṉ añcu varuṣam inda nāṭṭila irukkiṟaṉ. eṉra uḍaṉaḍit tiṭṭam — oru vīḍu kaṭṭi, kuḍumbam naḍattuṟadu. edirkālam paṟṟi nāṉ iṉṉum muḍivu seyyēllai; muḍiñcā orunāḷ sonda ūrukku tirumbuvaṉ.I was born in a small village. My native town stands by the sea. In childhood I bathed in the river every day and went fishing with father. In those times there were no telephones in the village; it was long ago. In my youth I finished school, then left for the city. At twenty I found my first job. Once I changed jobs, and then everything changed. Now I have lived in this country for five years. My nearest plans are to build a house and start a family. About the future I have not yet decided; if it works out, one day I will return to my native town.

Frequently asked
What level do you need to read this text in Tamil?
B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.
How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
