How it works
There is no separate word for 'if'. The condition shows as an ending on the verb of the first half. In live speech that ending is -னா: மழை வந்தா (maḻai vandā), நான் வர மாட்டேன் (nāṉ vara māṭṭēṉ) — 'if it rains, I will not come'.
It is built on the past stem, even when you mean the future. போனேன் (pōṉēṉ) gives போனா (pōṉā) 'if I go', செஞ்சேன் (señcēṉa) gives செஞ்சா. English says 'if I go', Tamil says 'if I went': the tense comes from the main half.
In books and on notices -ஆல் stands where -னா would: மழை வந்தால். The sense is the same, the register is not: a bank sign takes -ஆல், a queue gives you -னா.
And -னாலும் is 'even if': விலை அதிகமானாலும் (vilai adigamāṉālum), நான் வாங்குறேன் (nāṉ vāṅguṟēṉ). That is the same condition plus the tail -உம் (--um), which everywhere means 'and, even'.
