There is no 'that' clause in Tamil. Reported words go in exactly as they were said. The particle எண்டு (eṇḍu) is hung on the end, and the verb of speaking comes last. வாறன் (vāṟaṉ) எண்டு (eṇḍu) சொன்னார் (soṉṉār) — 'he: I am coming, so, said'. For example: “விமானம் (vimāṉam) இரத்தாகும் எண்டு (eṇḍu) அவை (avai) சொன்னினம்” (soṉṉiṉam) — They said the flight would be cancelled. How it works

English rewrites the person and says 'he said he would come'. Tamil touches nothing: inside the quote வாறன் (vāṟaṉ) 'I am coming' stays as it was.
That is how the island speaks: வாறன் (vāṟaṉ) எண்டு (eṇḍu) சொன்னார் (soṉṉār). In Tamil Nadu the tail -ன்னு stands instead of எண்டு (eṇḍu); you hear it in Indian film and song.
The same particle carries thought and hearsay. சரி (sari) இல்லை எண்டு நினைக்கிறன் (illai eṇḍu niṉaikkiṟaṉ) (sari illai eṇḍu niṉaikkiṟaṉ) — 'I think it is wrong'. விலை (vilai) ஏறும் (ēṟum) எண்டு சொல்லுகினம் (eṇḍu sollugiṉam) (vilai ēṟum eṇḍu sollugiṉam) — 'they say prices will rise'.
