To start, to finish, to drag on: phase through a service verb
'To stop', 'to finish', 'to set about' are separate words in English. In Tamil they are the main verb plus a helper. The helper answers not for the meaning but for whether the thing was carried through. For example: “வேலையை நாளைக்கு தொடங்கிடுறம், ஒரு கிழமையில முடிச்சிடுவம்” — Tomorrow we set about the work and finish it in a week. A rule from the Tamil course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
'To stop', 'to finish', 'to set about' are separate words in English. In Tamil they are the main verb plus a helper. The helper answers not for the meaning but for whether the thing was carried through.
-இடு: done and closed. முடிக்கிறேன் (muḍikkiṟēṉ) 'I finish' gives முடிச்சிடுறேன் (muḍicciḍuṟēṉ) — 'finished and closed'. தொடங்கிடுறேன் (toḍaṅgiḍuṟēṉ) is 'I have set about it'. One shade only: no way back.
-கொள்: done for oneself. முந்திக்கொள்ளுறேன் (mundikkoḷḷuṟēṉ) 'I overtake', அடக்கிக்கொள்ளுறேன் 'I hold myself back'. The action comes back to the one doing it.
And the main point. English 'stop' and 'finish' differ over whether the thing was carried through. Tamil says that with the helper: நிப்பாட்டுறேன் (nippāṭṭuṟēṉ) is 'stopped halfway', முடிச்சிடுறேன் 'carried through'. The wrong helper says the wrong thing.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
