-அல் / -தல் is the bare name of the action: பசுமையாக்கு 'to green' gives பசுமையாக்கல் (pasumaiyākkal), பின்தங்கு 'to lag' gives பின்தங்கல் (piṉdaṅgal). The form is bookish; papers hold more of it than speech does.
-இப்பு / -ப்பு gives a result or a property: அவதானி 'to watch' gives அவதானிப்பு (avadāṉippu), தயாரி 'to make' gives தயாரிப்பு (tayārippu). This is the liveliest of the four. And -ஈடு (-īḍu) is one completed act: அள 'to measure' gives அளவீடு (aḷavīḍu).
-மை / -தன்மை gives a quality, not an action: நிலை (nilai) gives நிலைத்தன்மை (nilaittaṉmai) 'stability', பல வகை (pala vagai) gives பல்வகைமை (palvagaimai) 'variety'. The English '-ness' is their exact match.
