Vodotoranj, ugljenični otisak: how Serbian glues words together

Half the working words are built out of parts: vodoinstalater, vatrogasac, nalazište, otpremnica. Once you see how they are assembled, an unfamiliar word reads at first sight. For example: “Ватрогасци (Vatrogasci) су (su) стигли (stigli) на (na) градилиште (gradilište) за (za) десет (deset) минута” (minuta) — The firefighters reached the building site in ten minutes. A rule from the Serbian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Half the working words are built out of parts: vodoinstalater, vatrogasac, nalazište, otpremnica. Once you see how they are assembled, an unfamiliar word reads at first sight.

Two roots and a linking -o-: vodotoranj (voda + toranj), vatrogasac (vatra + gasiti), dugotrajan, tvrdoglavost. The last vowel of the first part gives way to that o: voda, vatra.

The place suffix -ište: gradilište — a building site, nalazište — a deposit, igralište — a playground, skladište — a warehouse. Meet -ište and read it as "the place where…".

The paperwork suffix -nica: otpremnica, propusnica, pozivnica — documents, all three. And -ost names a quality: stabilnost, tačnost, lenjost.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

Vodotoranj, ugljenični otisak: how does it work in Serbian?

Half the working words are built out of parts: vodoinstalater, vatrogasac, nalazište, otpremnica. Once you see how they are assembled, an unfamiliar word reads at first sight.

What does it look like in a Serbian example sentence?

“Ватрогасци (Vatrogasci) су (su) стигли (stigli) на (na) градилиште (gradilište) за (za) десет (deset) минута” (minuta) (Vatrogasci su stigli na gradilište za deset minuta) — The firefighters reached the building site in ten minutes. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
