Zamolio me je: the queue of short words that breaks the memorized phrase
The memorized zamolio je almost never stands whole in a living sentence: a short pronoun steps in between its two words. Zamolio me je da sačekam. Objasnio mi je zašto. How it works
The memorized zamolio je almost never stands whole in a living sentence: a short pronoun steps in between its two words. Zamolio me je da sačekam. Objasnio mi je zašto.
The reason is familiar: short words stand second in the sentence. What is new is that several of them can pile up at once. Then they keep a strict order of their own.
The order runs li, then sam/si/je, then "to whom" (mi, mu, joj). After those come "whom" (me, ga, ih), then se, and the helper je last.
Hence dao mi ga je, never "dao je mi ga". Jesi li mu rekao? puts li first. And no sentence may open with a short word: "Me je zamolio" is impossible.
