Text

  • Мы купили новый стол на кухню и стали выбирать размер. Длина старого стола — метр двадцать, а ширина — восемьдесят сантиметров. В магазине предложили стол на десять сантиметров длиннее и такой же по высоте. Дома мы проверили: примерно полметра осталось до окна. Новый стол встал ровно на своё место, и кухня сразу изменилась. Теперь вся семья ужинает вместе.

We bought a new table for the kitchen and began choosing the size. The old table is a meter twenty long and eighty centimeters wide. At the store they offered a table ten centimeters longer and the same in height. At home we checked: about half a meter was left to the window. The new table fit exactly into its place, and the kitchen changed at once. Now the whole family has dinner together.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. How long was the old table?
  2. What table did the store offer?
  3. What did they check at home?
  4. How did the story end?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Russian?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
