Celownik: the dative after dzięki, przeciwko and verbs like help
The dative, celownik in Polish, is the to-whom form. You meet it in every thank you. For example: “Dziękuję wam za wszystko, to dzięki tobie” — Thank you for everything — it is thanks to you. A rule from the Polish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
The dative, celownik in Polish, is the to-whom form. You meet it in every thank you.
Masculine and neuter nouns take -owi or -u: lekarz → lekarzowi, pan → panu. Feminine nouns take -e: mama → mamie, kobieta → kobiecie. In the plural it is almost always -om: sąsiadom, dzieciom.
Three common uses. Dzięki — thanks to: dzięki sąsiadom. Przeciwko — against: szczepienie przeciw grypie, a flu shot. And verbs like thank, help and believe: dziękuję mamie, pomagam bratu, wierzę ci.
The trap is pain. boli takes the object form, not the dative: Boli mnie głowa — my head hurts. Feeling cold takes the dative: Jest mi zimno, Zimno jej.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
