Lepiej, nie lepszy: degrees of the adverb and the jak naj- pattern
An adjective answers what kind, an adverb answers how — and English translates both well and better alike, hence all the confusion. Here they are kept apart the way English keeps good and well apart. For example: “On gra lepiej, choć jego zespół jest lepszy” — He plays better although his team is better. A rule from the Polish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
An adjective answers what kind, an adverb answers how — and English translates both well and better alike, hence all the confusion. Here they are kept apart the way English keeps good and well apart.
Ten film jest dobry — what kind: good. On śpiewa dobrze — how: well. Then the ladders part: the film is lepszy, the singing is lepiej; the best film is najlepszy, best of all is najlepiej.
Four irregular pairs go by heart: dobrze → lepiej → najlepiej, źle → gorzej → najgorzej, dużo → więcej → najwięcej, mało → mniej → najmniej. The other adverbs are regular: szybko → szybciej → najszybciej, głośno → głośniej — the tail is -ej, not -je.
Two constructions on top. Im ..., tym ... — the ... the ...: Im szybciej, tym lepiej. And jak naj- plus a superlative gives all of English as ... as possible: jak najszybciej, jak najwięcej, jak najtaniej.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
