English

Gdzie or dokąd: two questions, and the case changes behind them

English often uses one little word for place and for motion. The cup is on the table; put it on the table. Polish keeps the preposition and changes the ending of the noun instead. For example: “Klucze są w kuchni, a ty idziesz do kuchni?” — The keys are in the kitchen, and you are going to the kitchen? A rule from the Polish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

English often uses one little word for place and for motion. The cup is on the table; put it on the table. Polish keeps the preposition and changes the ending of the noun instead.

gdzie? — where is it? After w and na it takes the at-form: w mieszkaniu, na stole. After nad, pod, za and przed it takes the with-form: nad rzeką, pod stołem, za miastem.

dokąd? — where to? After na, nad, pod and za it takes the object form: na stół, nad rzekę, pod stół, za miasto. Into a building or a country is do with the of-form: do mieszkania, do kuchni, do Polski.

The working test: does something stay or move? Staying asks gdzie; moving asks dokąd. So put it on the table is na stół, even though English says on.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in a Polish example sentence?

“Klucze są w kuchni, a ty idziesz do kuchni?” — The keys are in the kitchen, and you are going to the kitchen? A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
