Na święta, w sobotę, o ósmej: time and occasion through prepositions

Polish sets out time with prepositions, much as English uses on, at and in. Each one has its own occasions. For example: “Na święta jedziemy do babci, wracamy w poniedziałek” — For the holidays we go to grandma and return on Monday. A rule from the Polish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Polish sets out time with prepositions, much as English uses on, at and in. Each one has its own occasions.

Na is for an occasion: na święta — for the holidays, na urodziny, na Wigilię. W is for a day or a month: w sobotę, w grudniu. So na Boże Narodzenie is for Christmas, but w Boże Narodzenie is on Christmas Day.

O is for clock time: o ósmej — at eight. Za counts from now: za tydzień — in a week, za pięć minut — in five minutes.

Podczas means during and takes the of-form: podczas świąt. Od ... do ... is from ... to: od piątku do niedzieli. And w weekend is at the weekend, while na weekend is for the weekend.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
