How it works
The tense in someone else's words does not change. What the person said stays in the tense it was said in: Powiedział: "Jestem zmęczony." → Powiedział, że jest zmęczony. The present stays present, although said is past — English shifts here, this language does not. The comma before że is obligatory: it is skipped more often than any other.
Questions branch. A question with the word gdzie, kiedy, dlaczego keeps its word: Zapytał, gdzie mieszkam. A question without such a word takes czy — the same question particle from the first lessons: Zapytał, czy przyjdę — he asked whether I would come.
A command passes through żeby: Powiedział, żebym poczekał — he said I should wait. The particle by inside żeby changes with the person ordered: żebym, żebyś, żeby. The same żeby passes requests, advice and wishes — everything that is not a fact.
Time and place pointers shift as in English: jutro becomes następnego dnia, tutaj becomes tam. But word order is free: Powiedział, że jutro przyjedzie and Powiedział, że przyjedzie jutro mean the same.
