English

Cause, purpose, concession: dlatego, przez, żeby, chociaż

Polish has short words for why, what for and despite what. For example: “Spóźniłem się przez korek, chociaż wyjechałem wcześnie” — I was late because of a traffic jam, although I left early. A rule from the Polish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Polish has short words for why, what for and despite what.

Cause. The everyday word is bo, placed after the main part: Zostaję w domu, bo pada — I'm staying in because it's raining. ponieważ means the same and sounds more formal. przez points to something to blame: przez ciebie spóźniłem się — I'm late because of you.

Purpose. żeby says what an action is for, followed by the plain verb: Przyszedłem, żeby ci pomóc — I came to help you. żeby already contains by, the would-word.

Despite. chociaż means although: Chociaż padało, poszliśmy. Its short partner mimo takes the of-form, the shape a noun has after bez: mimo deszczu — despite the rain. Polish always writes a comma before bo, żeby and chociaż.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
