Pracowity, cierpliwy, porywczy: what character adjectives are made of

Almost all character adjectives are assembled from a familiar stem and a short tail. The tail is not decoration: it tells you what kind of property you are looking at. For example: “Skromny człowiek rzadko mówi o sobie” — A modest person rarely talks about himself. A rule from the Polish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Almost all character adjectives are assembled from a familiar stem and a short tail. The tail is not decoration: it tells you what kind of property you are looking at.

-liwy is built from a verb and means inclined to do: cierpliwy from cierpieć — to endure; gadatliwy from gadać — to chat. The model is recognised at half a word.

-ny is the most general tail: poważny, spokojny, obojętny. The trap here is permanent: when declined, the tail changes with gender and number — poważny chłopiec, but poważna sprawa, poważne kroki.

-czy adds sharpness: porywczy from poryw — an outburst. And nie- gives the opposite without a new stem: niezawodny — reliable; niegrzeczny — impolite. One prefix, and the character flips.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
