სკოლის პირდაპირ, სახლის უკან: words that stand after the noun

Some relations hang on the end of the word; others are a separate word, and that word stands after the noun. You cannot give directions without them. For example: “მაღაზია სკოლის პირდაპირ არის” — The shop is opposite the school. A rule from the Georgian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Some relations hang on the end of the word; others are a separate word, and that word stands after the noun. You cannot give directions without them.

Almost all of them want -ის (-is) in front of them. აფთიაქის პირდაპირ — opposite the pharmacy, სახლის უკან (sakhlis ukan) — behind the house, ხიდის წინ (khidis tsin) — in front of the bridge. Same with ქუჩის გასწვრივ (kuchis gastsvriv) — along the street.

The commonest mistake is putting such a word first. პირდაპირ აფთიაქის sounds as wrong as 'the pharmacy opposite' does in English. The order is fixed: the landmark, then the relation.

პირდაპირ (pirdapir) stands apart. On its own, with no noun in front, it means 'straight ahead': პირდაპირ იარე — go straight. With -ის before it, it becomes 'opposite'.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
