მებაღე, მშენებელი, მექანიკოსი: how an activity becomes a person

Almost every word for a profession is built from a familiar root by one of two frames. Recognize the frame and you understand a profession you never learned. For example: “მებაღე ბაღში მუშაობს, მეხანძრე კი ხანძარზე დადის” — The gardener works in the garden, and the firefighter goes out to fires. A rule from the Georgian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Almost every word for a profession is built from a familiar root by one of two frames. Recognize the frame and you understand a profession you never learned.

First: მე- (me)…-ე — the person at a thing. Take an object and wrap it on both sides: ბაღი (garden) → მებაღე (gardener), ხანძარი (fire) → მეხანძრე (firefighter). This frame is the liveliest: new words are still made with it.

Second: მ-…-ელი — the person at an action. Here the root is a verb: წერს (writes) → მწერალი (writer), ხატავს (paints) → მხატვარი (painter). The vowel wanders: -ელი, -ალი, -არი.

It works both ways. From მებაღე you get ბაღი, from მცხობელი (mtskhobeli) you get აცხობს (bakes). An unknown word on a sign stops being opaque.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

how an activity becomes a person: how does it work in Georgian?

Almost every word for a profession is built from a familiar root by one of two frames. Recognize the frame and you understand a profession you never learned.

What does it look like in an example sentence Georgian?

“მებაღე ბაღში მუშაობს, მეხანძრე კი ხანძარზე დადის” (mebaghe baghshi mushaobs, mekhandzre ki khandzarze dadis) — The gardener works in the garden, and the firefighter goes out to fires. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
