გა-, და-, ჩა-, მო-: the prefix that decides everything
A prefix in front of the verb does two things at once. It shows direction, and it turns an unfinished action into a finished one. For example: “სუპი გავაცხელე და პური დავჭერი” — I heated up the soup and cut the bread. A rule from the Georgian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
A prefix in front of the verb does two things at once. It shows direction, and it turns an unfinished action into a finished one.
ვხარშავ — I am cooking, მოვხარშავ — I will cook it through. ვაცხელებ — I am heating, გავაცხელებ — I will heat it up. The present takes almost no prefix; the future and the past take one almost always.
Direction is the more interesting half. გა- — outward, to the end: გავიდა (went out). და- (da) — down, or done as a fact: დაჯდა (sat down). ჩა- — in and down: ჩავიდა (went down). მო- — here, toward the speaker: მოვიდა (came). შე- — in: შევიდა (went in).
Hence the consequence: one root with different prefixes gives different words. წერა (tsera) with და- is to write, with გადა- to rewrite, with ჩა- to write down. Asking 'where to?' works better than a list.
Table
| Prefix | Direction | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| გა- | out, to the end | გავაცხელე | I heated it up |
| და- | down, the fact done | დავამარილე | I salted it |
| ჩა- | in and down | ჩავყარე | I tipped it in |
| მო- | over here, to the speaker | მოვხარშე | I cooked it |
| შე- | into | შევწვი | I fried it |
| გადა- | across, again | გადავაკეთე | I remade it |
| no prefix | the action goes on | ვხარშავ | I am cooking (now) |

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in an example sentence Georgian?
“სუპი გავაცხელე და პური დავჭერი” (supi gavatskhele da puri davcheri) — I heated up the soup and cut the bread. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
