Մարդիկ, կանայք, ժողովուրդ: plurals that break the rule
The general plural rule is simple: a one-syllable word takes -եր, a longer one -ներ. It covers almost every word, and words about people are where it breaks most often. For example: “Այս (ays) գիւղին (kyughin) մէջ (mech) հազար (hazar) մարդ (mart) կ'ապրի (g'abri), մարդիկ (martig) իրար կը (gə) ճանչնան” (janchnan) — A thousand people live in this village, and people know one another. A rule from the Western Armenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
The general plural rule is simple: a one-syllable word takes -եր, a longer one -ներ. It covers almost every word, and words about people are where it breaks most often.
Forms to know by heart. մարդ (mart) (a person) → մարդիկ (martig), not «մարդեր». կին (gin) (a woman) → կանայք. տղամարդ (dghamart) (a man) → տղամարդիկ. The few forms in -այք are all about people: a relic of an ancient ending.
Collectives: one word for many people. ժողովուրդ (zhoghovurt) (a people) and բնակչութիւն (pnagchut'yun) (a population) are singular, and so is their verb: բնակչութիւնը (pnagchut'yunə) կը (gə) մեծնայ (medznay) (pnagchut'yunə gə medznay). In the plural they change meaning: ժողովուրդներ means "peoples". People inside are counted with հոգի (hoki), a soul: տասը (dasə) հոգի (hoki) (dasə hoki) — ten people.
After a number — the singular. հինգ (hink) բնակիչ (pnagich) (hink pnagich), քսան (k'san) հոգի (hoki) (k'san hoki) — without -ներ. It feels wrong for a month, then it becomes convenient: the number has already said it all.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in a Western Armenian example sentence?
“Այս (ays) գիւղին (kyughin) մէջ (mech) հազար (hazar) մարդ (mart) կ'ապրի (g'abri), մարդիկ (martig) իրար կը (gə) ճանչնան” (janchnan) (ays kyughin mech hazar mart g'abri, martig irar gə janchnan) — A thousand people live in this village, and people know one another. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
