How it works

At the gym, many phrases are about one person making another act: the coach drills the team, a mother dresses her child. For this you insert -ցն- into the verb: կը (gə) վազցնէ (gə vaztsne) — makes run, հագցուր (haktsur) — dress (him), քնացուր (k'natsur) — put (him) to bed.

Who is made to act. The second person is an ordinary object with the article: մարզիկները մէկ (meg) ժամ (zham) կը (gə) վազցնէ (marzignerə meg zham gə vaztsne) — he makes the athletes run for an hour. Likewise Երեխան (yerekhan) հագցուր (yerekhan haktsur) — dress the child.

The pair people mix up. When you do it yourself, the verb takes a different marker, -ու- (-u): կը (gə) մարզուիմ (marzuim) (gə marzuim) — I train myself, while կը (gə) մարզէ (gə marze) — he trains others.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

to make, to give and to bring to: how does it work in Western Armenian?

At the gym, many phrases are about one person making another act: the coach drills the team, a mother dresses her child. For this you insert -ցն- into the verb: կը (gə) վազցնէ (gə vaztsne) — makes run, հագցուր — dress (him), քնացուր — put (him) to bed.

What does it look like in a Western Armenian example sentence?

“Մարզիչը (marzichə) մարզիկները մէկ (meg) ժամ (zham) կը (gə) վազցնէ” (marzichə marzignerə meg zham gə vaztsne) — The coach makes the athletes run for an hour. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
