Ստիպուած էի, կարելի էր: must and can in yesterday and tomorrow
"I had to wait", "parking was not allowed", "I'll have to return the car tomorrow" — modality usually lives in yesterday or tomorrow. The modal words themselves do not conjugate. The copula next to them is what moves. For example: “Ստիպուած (sdibuadz) էի (ei) ամբողջ (ampoghch) գիշեր (kisher) օդանաւակայանին (otanavagayanin) մէջ (mech) սպասել” (sbasel) — I had to wait at the airport all night. A rule from the Western Armenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
"I had to wait", "parking was not allowed", "I'll have to return the car tomorrow" — modality usually lives in yesterday or tomorrow. The modal words themselves do not conjugate. The copula next to them is what moves.
Պէտք է (bedk' e) in three tenses: պէտք է (bedk' e) երթամ (yert'am) (bedk' e yert'am) — I have to go, պէտք էր (bedk' er) երթայի — I had to go, պէտք (bedk) պիտի (bidi) ըլլայ (əllay) երթամ (yert'am) (bedk' bidi əllay yert'am) — I will have to go. In the past the verb moves into the past as well.
Կրնամ (grnam) is a real verb and conjugates itself: կրնամ (grnam) — I can, կրնայի — I could, պիտի (bidi) կարենամ — I will be able to. Կարելի (gareli) է (gareli e) moves only the copula: կարելի (gareli) էր (er) (gareli er) — it was allowed. "Not allowed" is կարելի չէ (gareli che), in the past կարելի (gareli) չէր (cher) (gareli cher).
Separately stands ստիպուած (sdibuadz) — forced: ստիպուած (sdibuadz) էի (ei) սպասել (sbasel) (sdibuadz ei sbasel) — I had to wait. պարտաւոր եմ (em) — I am obliged, the word of contracts. And a trap: Պէտք չէ (bedk' che) շտապել (shdabel) (bedk' che shdabel) — no need to hurry; Կարելի չէ (gareli che) շտապել (shdabel) (gareli che shdabel) — hurrying is forbidden.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
Frequently asked
must and can in yesterday and tomorrow: how does it work in Western Armenian?
"I had to wait", "parking was not allowed", "I'll have to return the car tomorrow" — modality usually lives in yesterday or tomorrow. The modal words themselves do not conjugate. The copula next to them is what moves.
What does it look like in a Western Armenian example sentence?
“Ստիպուած (sdibuadz) էի (ei) ամբողջ (ampoghch) գիշեր (kisher) օդանաւակայանին (otanavagayanin) մէջ (mech) սպասել” (sbasel) (sdibuadz ei ampoghch kisher otanavagayanin mech sbasel) — I had to wait at the airport all night. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
