Որպէսզի, չնայած որ, ուստի: complex sentences in full

Talking about opinions needs more than որ (vor) and երբ (yerp): purpose, concession, consequence, limits in time. Learn two rules before the conjunctions. For example: “Շուտ (shud) դուրս (turs) եկայ (yega), որպէսզի (vorbeszi) ուշ (ush) չմնամ” — I left early so as not to be held up. A rule from the Western Armenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Talking about opinions needs more than որ (vor) and երբ (yerp): purpose, concession, consequence, limits in time. Learn two rules before the conjunctions.

Rule one: պիտի (bidi) almost never goes into the subordinate part. After եթէ (yet'e), երբ (yerp), մինչեւ (minchev), որպէսզի (vorbeszi) the verb stays bare: Հէնց որ (hents vor) հասնիմ (hents vor hasnim), պիտի (bidi) զանգեմ (zankem) (bidi zankem) — as soon as I arrive, I'll call. The exception is թէեւ (t'eev): a concession states a fact, so the future is fine there.

Rule two: the copula է (e) goes to the end of its clause. You say Կը (gə) կարծեմ (gardzem) (gə gardzem), որ (vor) ասիկա (asiga) լաւագոյն (lavakuyn) տարբերակն (darperagn) է (vor asiga lavakuyn darperagn e), never "որ (vor) է լաւագոյն (lavakuyn) (vor e lavakuyn)". A negation takes the same slot: …որ (vor) ատիկա (adiga) ճիշդ (jishd) չէ (che) (vor adiga jishd che).

Purpose — որպէսզի (vorbeszi): որպէսզի (vorbeszi) չուշանամ (vorbeszi chushanam) — so as not to be late. Concession — չնայած (chnayadz) որ (vor) (chnayadz vor) and թէեւ (t'eev). Consequence — ուստի (usdi). Մինչեւ (minchev) means both "until" and "by the time", and takes no "not": մինչեւ (minchev) գամ (kam) (minchev kam) — until I come.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

complex sentences in full: how does it work in Western Armenian?

Talking about opinions needs more than որ (vor) and երբ (yerp): purpose, concession, consequence, limits in time. Learn two rules before the conjunctions.

What does it look like in a Western Armenian example sentence?

“Շուտ (shud) դուրս (turs) եկայ (yega), որպէսզի (vorbeszi) ուշ (ush) չմնամ” (shud turs yegay, vorbeszi ush chmnam) — I left early so as not to be held up. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
